Estonia: Population by Ethnicity

The last census in Estonia was organised by the Soviet authorities in 1989. Much has changed since that time-the Soviet Union collapsed and in migration to Estonia has slowed while out migration has returned to the same average as it was before 1991.

However, as no census of the population has been completed since 1989, no accurate or comprehensive picture of the current structure of Estonia's population is available. A new census has been planned for March 31, 2000.

The most reliable estimate is from the Estonian Statistical Office which has compiled data on the population based on the data of last census of the population and registration of vital events (births, deaths and change of residence).
